Ardeth Bay is only a secondary character in the first season. Most part of the series, the O'Connels are busy with getting the "Scrolls of Thebes" and are travelling all around the world. Alex is in the focus, who unfortunately wears a special bracelet which gives him unnatural powers, but he wants to get rid of this dangerous bracelet.

From the official page of the first mummy series I got a description of Ardeth Bay:
Ardeth Bay is a secondary character who is a fearless fighter and a member of the ancient caste of warriors known as the Medji. The Medjai (who are "dedicated to the brotherhood of man. Under the all seeing eye of God") have always had the responsibility to defend the Egyptian people from evil, and with Imhotep on the loose, Ardeth is called into action to aid the O'Connells, especially in the stories which take place in Egypt. A bearded man in his twenties with pierced black eyes and the slight hint of an Egyptian accent, Ardeth's knowledge of ancient rituals is vast, but he's also a man of action. Nobody can ride a horse or wield a saber like Ardeth, and there's no one else Rick would rather have watching his back. Ardeth helps put situations in perspective with his clear, focused thinking. He also knows the intimate details and mythology of Imhotep's history which have been passed down from generation to generation of Medji. Ardeth is well aware of the havoc and destruction Imhotep is capable of, especially if the mummy discovers the srcolls before he and the O'Connels do.
